Sponsorship

The real value of sponsoring an award

There’s a version of awards sponsorship that’s easy to dismiss. Logo on a programme, banner by a bar, a mention from the stage, a few photos on social media. Pay the fee, tick the box, move on.

But that’s not what good sponsorship looks like — and it’s not what the best brands get out of it either. When chosen well, it can be one of the most effective marketing investments a business makes.

It signals what you value, not just what you sell

Putting your logo on a backdrop is easy. Choosing a category that genuinely reflects your values is harder — and far more powerful. The category is the message. When it aligns with what your brand stands for, sponsorship becomes a shorthand for your values — recognised by an audience that’s already engaged and paying attention.

It’s why I’ve chosen to sponsor the Food & Drink Hero category at the Velvet Food and Drink Awards — an award that celebrates not just individual excellence, but the willingness to champion others too. That’s exactly the kind of value I want my brand associated with.

It puts you in the right room

Awards events bring together exactly the kind of people most marketing spend is trying to reach — business owners, operators, decision-makers, peers, press and potential partners — all in one place, in a positive frame of mind. Most marketing has to fight hard to earn that attention. Sponsorship gives you context, credibility and a reason to be there before you’ve even introduced yourself.

The conversations that happen at an awards ceremony are often worth more than the branding alone.

It creates content across the year

A well-chosen sponsorship isn’t a single event — it’s a campaign that unfolds over months. Announcement. Nominations open. Shortlist revealed. Judging. Winner. Post-event coverage.

Each moment is a reason to communicate with your audience through social media, email, PR and blog content.

One sponsorship can fuel six or seven pieces of meaningful content across the year, each with a genuine reason to be posted.

It builds long-term equity and community

The best sponsorships aren’t one-offs. Being the category sponsor for several consecutive years builds a recognition no single advertisement can match — your brand becomes genuinely associated with what you’re supporting.

For regional or sector-specific awards in particular, it also signals that you’re invested in the community around you, not just your own business. Clients don’t just hire capability; they hire people whose values align with theirs.

Choosing the right opportunity

Not every awards sponsorship is worth the investment. The ones that work share a few things: the event reaches an audience you genuinely want to connect with; the category reflects something you stand for, the package includes more than a logo, and the organiser treats sponsors as partners rather than income. Get those things right and the return goes far beyond the evening itself.

Sponsorship works when it’s an extension of your brand story, not an add-on to it.

I’ve helped clients find the right awards and deliver sponsorships that created memorable campaigns and measurable results. If you’d like to talk about how it could work for your brand, I’d be happy to think it through.
